5th Annual Uniacke Community
Beautification Day

When it started five years ago, Beautification Day’s objective was to clean up the downtown neighbourhood, pick up trash and plant flowers to perk the area up. Since then it’s morphed into a street party with purpose with residents of the area turning up in droves to make their community a little bit nicer.

Halifax Regional Police have been involved with the annual cleanup since it started. Chief Frank Beazley not only endorses the efforts of Communities and Uniacke Square Engaging (C.A.U.S.E) but serves as barbecue chef cooking hot dogs and hamburgers for the community. Officers patrolling the area also stop in during the day to lend a hand if they can.

The clean up campaign is done in partnership with HRM and Metro Regional Housing Authority along with CAUSE. Community Response Officers Csts. Holly Thomas and Winnell Jackson helped CAUSE organize the event. Even before it officially started the morning of June 5, folks in the neighbourhood were out picking up litter and working on their gardens. They were joined by downtown Halifax Coun. Dawn Sloane and HRM Mayor Peter Kelly.

CAUSE member Donna Nelligan said Beautification Day demonstrates the strength of the community spirit in Uniacke Square and the desire by residents to improve their neighbourhood.
